PURPOSE: The main objective is to quantify the lens nuclear opacity using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and to evaluate its association with Lens Opacities Classification System III (LOCS-III) system, lens thickness (LT), and surgical parameters. The secondary objective is to assess the diagnostic model performance for hard nuclear cataract. METHODS: This study included 70 eyes of 57 adults with cataract, with 49 (70%) and 21 (30%) in training and validation cohort, respectively. Correlations of the average nuclear density (AND) /maximum nuclear density (MND) with LOCS-III scores, LT, and surgical parameters were analyzed. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis, receiver operating characteristic curves and calibration curves were performed for the diagnostic of hard nuclear cataract. RESULTS: The pre-operative uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), intraocular pressure (IOP), mean axial length (AL), and LT were 1.20 ± 0.47 log MAR, 15.50 ± 2.87 mmHg, 27.34 ± 3.77 mm and 4.32 ± 0.45 mm, respectively. The average nuclear opalescence (NO) and nuclear colour (NC) scores were 3.61 ± 0.94 and 3.50 ± 0.91 (ranging from 1.00 to 6.90), respectively. The average AND and MND were 137.94 ± 17.01 and 230.01 ± 8.91, respectively. NC and NO scores both significantly correlated with the AND (rNC = 0.733, p = 0.000; rNO = 0.755, p = 0.000) and MND (rNC = 0.643, p = 0.000; rNO = 0.634, p = 0.000). In the training cohort, the area under the curve (AUC) of the model was 0.769 (P < 0.001, 95%CI 0.620-0.919), which had a good degree of differentiation (Fig. 2a). The calibration curve showed good agreement between predicted and actual probability. CONCLUSION: The nuclear density measurement on SD-OCT images can serve as an objective and reliable indicator for quantifying nuclear density.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the magnitude of IOL transversal shift (ITS) after phacoemulsification and to analyse the factors contributing to IOL decentration and ITS. METHODS: 94 consecutive patients who underwent cataract surgery and IOL implantation was enrolled. Each patient underwent anterior segment optical coherence tomography with CASIA 2 (Tomey, Nagoya, Japan) to assess crystalline lens decentration, thickness and diameter seven days preoperatively and at one and sixty days postoperatively. Univariate and multivariate linear regression analysis were performed to evaluate the determinants of ITS and final decentration. RESULTS: The preoperative crystalline lens diameter was associated with the ITS and with the IOL final decentration. A positive association between the final IOL decentration and the first post-surgical day decentration was found (p < 0.0001). CONCLUSION: Greater crystalline lens diameter was associated with greater decentration and with greater ITS. Day-one IOL decentration seems to be the main determinant of final IOL decentration.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to investigate the morphologic features of the crystalline lens in Primary Angle Closure Disease (PACD) patients with zonular instability during cataract surgery using the swept-source CASIA 2 Anterior Segment-Optical Coherence Tomography (AS-OCT) system. METHODS: A total of 398 eyes (125 PACD eyes with zonular instability, 133 PACD eyes with zonular stability, and 140 cataract patient controls) of 398 patients who underwent cataract surgery combined or not glaucoma surgery between January 2021 and January 2023 were enrolled. The crystalline lens parameters were measured by CASIA2 AS-OCT. Then, logistic regression was performed to evaluate the risk factors associated with zonular instability. RESULTS: The results revealed that PACD eyes had a more anterior lens equator position, a steeper anterior curvature of lens, shorter Axial Length (AL), shallower Anterior Chamber Distance (ACD), higher Lens Vault (LV) and thicker Lens Thickness (LT), when compared to eyes in the cataract control group. Furthermore, PACD eyes in the zonular instability group had steeper front R, front Rs and Front Rf, flatter back Rf, thicker lens anterior part thickness, higher lens anterior-to-posterior part thickness ratios, shallower ACD, and greater LV, when compared to PACD eyes with zonular stability. The logistic regression analysis, which was adjusted for age and gender, revealed that zonular instability was positively correlated with anterior part thickness, lens anterior-to-posterior part thickness ratio, and LV, but was negatively correlated with lens anterior radius and ACD. CONCLUSION: Steeper anterior curvature, increased lens anterior part thickness, higher anterior-to-posterior part thickness ratio, shallower ACD, and greater LV are the anatomic features of PACD eyes associated with zonular instability.

Purpose: Quantitative fundus autofluorescence (QAF) currently deploys an age-based score to correct for lens opacification. However, in elderly people, lens opacification varies strongly between individuals of similar age, and innate lens autofluorescence is not included in the current correction formula. Our goal was to develop and compare an individualized formula. Methods: One hundred thirty participants were examined cross-sectionally, and a subset of 30 participants received additional multimodal imaging 2-week post-cataract-surgery. Imaging included the Scheimpflug principle, anterior chamber optical coherence tomography (AC-OCT), lens quantitative autofluorescence (LQAF), and retinal QAF imaging. Among the subset, least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression and backward selection was implemented to determine which lens score best predicts the QAF value after lens extraction. Subsequently, a spline mixed model was applied to the whole cohort to quantify the influence of LQAF and Scheimpflug on QAF. Results: Age and LQAF measurements were found to be the most relevant variables, whereas AC-OCT measurements and Scheimpflug were eliminated by backward selection. Both an increase in Scheimpflug and LQAF values were associated with a decrease in QAF. The prediction error of the spline model (mean absolute error [MAE] ± standard deviation) of 32.2 ± 23.4 (QAF a.u.) was markedly lower compared to the current age-based formula MAE of 96.1 ± 93.5. Both smooth terms, LQAF (P < 0.01) and Scheimpflug (P < 0.001), were significant for the spline mixed model. Conclusions: LQAF imaging proved to be the most predictive for the impact of the natural lens on QAF imaging. The application of lens scores in the clinic could improve the accuracy of QAF imaging interpretation and might allow including aged patients in future QAF studies.

RESUMO

This case report investigates the radiation dose received by a paediatric patient with a ventricular assist device who underwent four non-contrast brain computed tomography (CT) scans, two brain perfusion CT scans and two head angiographic CT scans. The total estimated absorbed dose to the lens of the eye is above the 500 mGy radiation-induced cataract threshold. It is recommended that this patient and those with similar imaging histories have routine follow-up with an ophthalmologist. It is also recommended that radiation dose tracking and an electronic medical alert program be implemented to allow the identification of patients who may exceed tissue reaction thresholds.

BACKGROUND: The spatial position of the lens in patients with cortical age-related cataract (CARC) is unclear. We investigated a basis for the assessment of visual quality after cataract surgery by analysing the ultrasound biomicroscopic characteristics of the biological parameters of the lens in patients with CARC. METHODS: In this retrospective study, 119 patients (50 males and 69 females, totalling 238 eyes) with CARC who underwent simple cataract surgery were selected. The lens thickness (LT), axial length (AL), anterior chamber depth (ACD), lens vault (LV), trabecular-iris angle (TIA), iris-lens angle (ILA), iris-lens contact distance (ILCD) were measured by A-scan ultrasound and ultrasound biomicroscopy. The corresponding lens position (LP) and relative lens position (RLP) were calculated. RESULTS: LP was greater in men than in women (P < 0.05), LV was smaller in men than in women (P = 0.002), ILA and ILCD were not statistically significant (P = 0.072 and P = 0.854, respectively). There were significant differences in TIA, ILA, and ILCD in the four quadrants (all P < 0.05), with a trend in the distribution of TIA: superior < inferior < nasal < temporal, ILA: nasal < inferior < temporal < superior, and ILCD: superior < temporal < inferior < nasal. CONCLUSIONS: The lens protrudes more obviously in females than in males and the lens tilts to a certain extent with the increase of age and tends to be more upward and temporal in the supine position. Therefore, trends in lens-related parameters in patients with CARC should be taken seriously.

PURPOSE: To investigate the ciliary body anatomy and position of the implantable collamer lens (ICL) in low-vault eyes and analyze factors related to insufficient vault. SETTING: Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, Guangzhou, China. DESIGN: Retrospective case-control observational study. METHODS: In this study, 73 eyes of 73 patients with an insufficient vault (<250 µm) were matched with 73 eyes with an ideal vault (250 to 750 µm). Ultrasound biomicroscopy was used to determine the ciliary body morphology and ICL position. The biometric parameters acquired by Scheimpflug tomography were compared. The correlation between the vault and these factors was analyzed, and the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator method was used to screen the risk factors for low vault. RESULTS: The low-vault group had a steeper corneal curvature, thicker lens thickness (LT), higher crystalline lens rise, and shorter axial length (AL) (all P < .005). The ciliary process length (CPL) and maximum ciliary body thickness (CBTmax) were significantly smaller, and the trabecular-ciliary angle (TCA), iris-ciliary angle (ICA), and ciliary sulcus width (CSW) were significantly greater in the low-vault eyes (all P < .005). The low-vault group had more ICL haptics below the ciliary process, and TCA, ICA, CPL, CBTmax, CSW, and haptic position were related to the postoperative vault (all P < .05). CPL, AL, and LT were identified as predictors of a low vault. CONCLUSIONS: Malposition of ICL haptics behind the ciliary process is a risk factor for low vault. A shorter CPL, thicker LT, and shorter AL are significant risk factors for the postoperative low vault.

PURPOSE: To investigate biometric factors of the anterior segment of phakic eyes with cataracts. METHODS: This population-based study included Caucasian patients with cataracts in the University Eye Hospital, Goethe University Frankfurt, Germany. Biometric parameters were measured using the swept-source optical coherence tomography method. Patients were grouped into intermediate stages based on decades of life. RESULTS: In total, 6289 eyes of 3615 patients (age: 70.67 ± 8.42 years) were included. Age-related reductions in the anterior chamber depth (mean ± standard deviation) decreased from 3.26 ± 0.42 mm (group A: 55-59 years) to 2.94 ± 0.4 mm (group G: 85-89 years), and those in the axial length decreased from 24.37 ± 1.87 mm (group A) to 23.39 ± 1.07 mm (group G). Likewise, the white-to-white distance decreased from 12.12 ± 0.48 mm (group A) to 11.96 ± 0.47 mm (group G). Lens thickness tended to increase accordingly from 4.39 ± 0.36 µm (group A) to 4.9 ± 0.40 µm (group G). A comparison of the eyes showed no detectable lateral difference regarding the biometric parameters between the groups (axial length: p = 0.26, Rosenthal effect size = 0.03; lens thickness: p = 0.12, R = 0.03; anterior chamber depth: p = 0.63, Rosenthal effect size = 0.01). The axial length and anterior chamber depth differed significantly between sexes (r = 0.22, p < 0.0001 and r = 0.16, p < 0.0001, respectively). Multiple regression analysis of the anterior chamber depth as a function of biometry parameters as well as age and sex additionally indicated a positive correlation of anterior chamber depth with white-to-white distance (b = 0.32, p = 10-5), axial length (b = 0.10, p = 10-5), keratometry (b = 0.07, p = 10-5), and lens thickness (b=-0.05, p = 10-5) with a high effect size (Cohen f2=1.866, p = 10-5) and strong multiple correlation coefficient (Rosenthal effect size = 0.80, p = 10-5). CONCLUSIONS: In the anterior segment, there are age- and sex-dependent changes in biometric parameters. In addition, changes in anterior chamber depth were noted in relation to white-to-white distance, axial length, keratometry, and lens thickness. These data should be considered in lens calculation formulas.

PURPOSE: To observe the crystalline lens rise (CLR) in horizontal and vertical orientations using anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT). METHODS: Non-invasive swept-source AS-OCT was used to measure the lens thickness, CLR, and angle-to-angle distance (ATA) in both the horizontal and vertical orientations. Anterior chamber depth (ACD) and horizontal white-to-white corneal diameter were obtained using the Pentacam HR (Oculus Optikgeräte GmbH). Axial length was obtained using the IOLMaster 700 (Carl Zeiss Meditec AG). The paired t test was used to analyze the difference in CLR between the two orientations. Pearson correlation analysis was performed to investigate the correlations between CLR and other ocular variables. RESULTS: This prospective observational study comprised 99 eyes (99 patients) that underwent Visian Implantable Collamer Lens (STAAR Surgical) implantation for myopic correction. The mean CLR was 64.29 ± 168.04 and 208.09 ± 173.12 µm in the horizontal and vertical orientations, respectively. The vertical CLR (VCLR) was significantly greater than the horizontal CLR (HCLR) (P < .05). Both the HCLR and VCLR were positively correlated with lens thickness and negatively correlated with ACD (all P < .05). The difference in CLR (VCLR-HCLR) was positively correlated with the axial length and the difference in ATA between the two orientations (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS: VCLR was greater than HCLR in most patients with myopia, especially in the longer eyes. This nonuniform distribution in CLR implied different placements of the iridocorneal angles in the horizontal and vertical orientations and should be considered for the selection of ICL size and placement position. PURPOSE: To evaluate the correlation between lens density measured by IOL-Master 700 based on swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) technology and the phacodynamic parameters of Centurion phacoemulsification in cataract surgery. METHODS: This prospective study included 66 patients (83 eyes) with age-related cataracts. Using the Lens Opacities Classification System III (LOCS III), the lens nuclear color (NC), lens nuclear opalescence (NO), cortical (C), and posterior subcapsular (P) opacities were obtained. Six meridian orientations of IOL-Master 700 images were captured, and the lens and nuclear regions were analyzed using ImageJ to generate the average lens nucleus density (AND) and average lens density (ALD). Phacodynamic parameters were recorded. The correlation between lens density and the phacodynamic parameters was analyzed. According to the AND, patients were divided into four groups (soft, medium-hard, hard, and extremely hard nucleus), and the phacodynamic parameters were compared among groups. RESULTS: The correlation between the AND obtained by LOCS III grading and SS-OCT-based cataract quantification system score (NC and NO) was statistically significant (rNC = 0.795, rNO=0.794, both p = .000). AND correlated significantly with cumulative dissipated energy (CDE, r = 0.545, p = .000), total ultrasound time (TUST, r = 0.354, p = .001), and total torsional ultrasound time (TTUT, r = 0.314, p = .004). Among the four groups divided by AND, the difference in CDE (P13 = 0.002, P14 < 0.001, P24 = 0.002) was statistically significant. CONCLUSION: AND measured by IOL-Master 700, SS-OCT correlated significantly with LOCS III classification and phacodynamic parameters of the Centurion system, especially with CDE, TUST, and TTUT. AND can be used as an indicator for quantitative evaluation and help inform the surgical plan.

PURPOSE: To explore the distribution of lens volume (VOL) and its associated factors in noncataract adolescents and adults and patients with cataract in a Chinese population. SETTING: Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou, China. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. METHODS: 1674 eyes from 1674 Chinese participants (690 adolescents and 363 adults without cataract, and 621 patients with cataract) aged from 7 to 90 years were included. Lens thickness (LT) and lens diameter (LD) were measured using swept-source anterior segment optical coherence tomography (SS-AS OCT) to calculate VOL. Axial length (AL) was measured by IOL-Master 700. Pearson correlation analysis and multivariate linear regression models were used to evaluate the potential associated factors of lens dimensions. RESULTS: The mean VOL was 167.74 ± 12.18 mm 3 in noncataract adolescents, 185.20 ± 14.95 mm 3 in noncataract adults, and 226.10 ± 49.25 mm 3 in patients with cataract. VOL had no significant correlation with AL in patients with cataract ( P > .05), neither in noncataract adolescents nor noncataract adults, when adjusted with LT, LD, age, and sex ( P > .05). On the other hand, eyes with longer ALs tended to have smaller LTs and larger LDs in all groups (all P -trend < .05). Larger VOL was associated with older age in all groups (all P < .001). CONCLUSIONS: A data set of VOLs in Chinese eyes over a wide age range was presented. It is inaccurate to predict VOL, LT, and LD solely according to AL. The direct measurement and calculation of VOL in vivo and the establishment of the normal range of VOL could help predict the size of lens capsular bag and plan cataract surgery.

Graded index (GRIN) lens endoscopy has broadly benefited biomedical microscopic imaging by enabling accessibility to sites not reachable by traditional benchtop microscopes. It is a long-held notion that GRIN lenses can only be used as rigid probes, which may limit their potential for certain applications. Here, we describe bendable and long-range GRIN microimaging probes for a variety of potential micro-endoscopic biomedical applications. Using a two-photon fluorescence imaging system, we have experimentally demonstrated the feasibility of three-dimensional imaging through a 500-µm-diameter and ∼11 cm long GRIN lens subject to a cantilever beam-like deflection with a minimum bend radius of ∼25 cm. Bend-induced perturbation to the field of view and resolution has also been investigated quantitatively. Our development alters the conventional notion of GRIN lenses and enables a range of innovative applications. For example, the demonstrated flexibility is highly desirable for implementation into current and emerging minimally invasive clinical procedures, including a pioneering microdevice for high-throughput cancer drug selection.

PURPOSE: To test whether some biometry measurements provided by the Lenstar LS900 compared well with the AL-Scan, Pentacam rotating Scheimpflug camera, Ultrasound Biomicroscopy (UBM) and Tomey EM-3000. METHODS: Two hundred and one patients having routine cataract surgery had standard preoperative assessment. In this clinical study, the axis length (AL) and lens thickness (LT) were taken by Lenstar LS900 and AL-Scan; anterior chamber depth (ACD) was taken by Lenstar LS900, A-Scan, Pentacam and UBM; central corneal thickness (CCT) was taken by Lenstar LS900, Pentacam and Tomey EM-3000. The results were compared using a Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney U test and Pearson correlation calculations. Agreement was assessed through intraclass correlation coefficients and Bland-Altman plots. RESULTS: The highest correlation was found between Lenstar and AL-Scan for AL (r = 0.975; P < 0.001). For LT measurements, the correlation between these two devices was also good (r = 0.699; P < 0.001). Excellent correlations were showed between Lenstar and Pentacam or UBM for ACD (r = 0.948, 0.704, respectively, both P < 0.001), but not between Lenstar and AL-Scan (r = 0.453, P < 0.001). The correlations of CCT between Lenstar and Pentacam or Tomey EM-3000 were both excellent (r = 0.817, 0.882, respectively, both P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: In phakic eyes of cataract patients, measurements of AL, LT, ACD and CCT from Lenstar LS900 yielded results that correlated very well with other clinical instruments.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the importance of the xCT is a subunit. The cystine/glutamate antiporter is actually system xc-xCT subunit of the cystine/glutamate antiporter in maintaining redox balance by investigating the effects of the loss of xCT on lens transparency and cystine/cysteine balance in the aqueous humour. Methods: C57Bl/6 wild-type and xCT knockout mice at five age groups (6 weeks to 12 months) were used. Lens transparency was examined using a slit-lamp and morphological changes visualized by immunolabelling and confocal microscopy. Quantification of glutathione in lenses and cysteine and cystine levels in the aqueous was conducted by liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Results: Slit-lamp examinations revealed that 3-month-old wild-type mice and xCT knockout mice lenses exhibited an anterior localized cataract. The frequency of this cataract significantly increased in the knockout mice compared to the wild-type mice. Morphological studies revealed a localized swelling of the lens fiber cells at the anterior pole. Glutathione levels in whole lenses were similar between wild-type and knockout mice. However, glutathione levels were significantly decreased at 3 months in the knockout mice in the lens epithelium compared to the wild-type mice. Aqueous cysteine levels remained similar between wild-type and knockout mice at all age groups, whereas cystine levels were significantly increased in 3-, 9-, and 12-month-old knockout mice compared to wild-type mice. Conclusions: Loss of xCT resulted in the depletion of glutathione in the epithelium and an oxidative shift in the cysteine/cystine ratio of the aqueous. Together, these oxidative changes may contribute to the accelerated development of an anterior cataract in knockout mice, which appears to be a normal feature of aging in wild-type mice.

PURPOSE: This work was designed to study the effectiveness of radiation protection caps in lowering the dose to the brain and the eye lens during fluoroscopically guided interventions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two types of radiation protection caps were examined with regards to their capacity to lower the radiation dose. One cap is equipped with lateral flaps, the other one is not. These caps were fitted to the head of an anthropomorphic Alderson-Rando (A.-R.) phantom. The phantom was positioned aside an angiographic table simulating the position of the first operator during a peripheral arterial intervention. One of the brain slices and both eyes of the A.-R. phantom were equipped with thermoluminescence dosimeters (TLDs). RESULTS: The analysis of the data showed that the cap without lateral flaps reduced the dose to the brain by 11,5-27,5 percent depending on the position within the brain. The cap with lateral protection flaps achieved a shielding effect between 44,7 and 78,9 percent. When evaluating the dose to the eye, we did see an increase of dose reduction from 63,3 to 66,5 percent in the left eye and from 45,8 to 46,8 percent in the right eye for the cap without lateral protection. When wearing the cap with lateral protection we observed an increase of dose reduction from 63,4 to 67,2 percent in the left eye and from 45,8 to 50,0 percent in the right eye. CONCLUSION: Radiation protection caps can be an effective tool to reduce the dose to the brain and the eyes.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to characterize age-related changes in anterior human vitreous with 3-D swept source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) and evaluate associations with axial length (AL) and contrast sensitivity function (CSF). Methods: There were 49 phakic eyes in 49 patients (40.0 ± 19.3 years) had 3-D volumetric scanning of the lens and retrolental vitreous with SS-OCT at 1050 nm. OCT-derived indices of vitreous optical density (VOD), vitreous opacification ratio (VOR), and lens optical density (LOD) were correlated with AL and double-pass assessment of retinal point spread function (Objective Scatter Index [OSI]). CSF was measured using an adaptive-optics visual simulator (area under log-log contrast sensitivity function [AULCSF]). Results: Vitreous SS-OCT detected gel vitreous, liquefied lacunae, Berger's space, retrolental laminae, and fibrous opacifications. VOD, VOR, and LOD showed high reproducibility (intraclass correlation coefficients 0.968, 0.975, and 0.998, respectively). VOD was highly correlated with VOR (Pearson's R = 0.96, P < 0.000001). VOD, VOR, and LOD correlated with age (R = 0.48, 0.58, and 0.85, P < 0.001 for each). VOR and LOD correlated with OSI (R = 0.36, P = 0.0094, and R = 0.36, P = 0.0096, respectively). VOR correlated negatively with AULCSF (R = -0.53, P < 0.00009), which was related to OSI. Myopic eyes had higher OSI than nonmyopic eyes (P = 0.0121), consistent with correlation between OSI and AL (R = 0.37, P = 0.0091). Multivariable regression confirmed these findings. Conclusions: SS-OCT visualized microstructural features of anterior human vitreous, where opacification is associated with increased light scattering and CSF degradation. SS-OCT enables high-resolution optical evaluation of vitreous opacities.

PURPOSE: To characterize crystalline lens dimensions derived from in vivo spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) and identify associations among these parameters, ocular biometry, and age. METHODS: In this retrospective study, lens thickness (LT), lens diameter (LD), and lens volume (LV) were measured intraoperatively using SD-OCT in 293 eyes undergoing lens surgery. Correlations among LT, LD, LV, age, axial length (AL), and anterior chamber depth (ACD) were analyzed. Multiple regression analysis was performed to determine whether a combination of biometric data could predict LD and LV. RESULTS: Wide variations were observed in LT (3.6-5.7 mm), LD (7.5-11.9 mm), and LV (119.9-312.4 mm3) of aging eyes. Correlations among the 3 lens dimensions were statistically significant (LV-LT: r = 0.785; P < .001; LV-LD: r = 0.696; P < .001; and LT-LD: r = 0.121; P = .039). With age, the correlation coefficients of LT, LD, and LV were 0.526, 0.326, and 0.573, respectively (P < .001). Although there was significant correlation of AL with LT (r = -0.137; P = .002) and LD (r = 0.268; P < .001), it was not significant with LV (r = 0.084; P = .15). Subgroup analysis revealed that 19.8% of long eyes had LD >1 standard deviation (SD) above and that 5.2% had LD <1 SD below the mean LD. CONCLUSIONS: Dimensions of the aging lens vary considerably and are most accurately characterized by direct measurement of LT, LD, and LV, rather than making assumptions based on AL. These findings challenge historically proposed relationships between LD and AL and represent a normative dataset of contemporary geometric features of the aging lens, possibly aiding in surgical decision making and future developments in lens surgery.

RESUMO

Micro-CT visualization allows reconstruction of eye structures with the resolution of light microscopy and estimation of tissue densities. Moreover, this method excludes damaging procedures and allows further histological staining due to the similar steps in the beginning. We have shown the feasibility of the lab-based micro-CT machine usage for visualization of clinically important compartments of human eye such as trabecular outflow pathway, retina, iris and ciliary body after pre-treatment with iodine in ethanol. We also identified the challenges of applying this contrasting technique to lens, cornea, and retina and proposed alternative staining methods for these tissues. Thereby this work provides a starting point for other studies for imaging of human eyes in normal and pathological conditions using lab-based micro-CT systems.
